An urban tapestry
In the heart of Nolita, nestled between the vibrant energy of Soho and the authentic character of Chinatown, 152 Elizabeth emerges from an urban void: a former parking lot transformed into an expression of essential architecture. The choice of Tadao Ando is a tribute to material and light, the cornerstones of his architectural language. The building embodies a synthesis of neighborhood heritage and a timeless architectural vision, defined by pure geometry and tactile materials.
Architecture, a monolith embracing light
The building is conceived as a monolithic block of exposed concrete, its surface bearing the imprint of traditional Japanese formwork. From this solid mass, a volume of glass and steel emerges, refracting light and creating a continuous dialogue between inside and out. Compact yet permeable, the structure plays with solids and voids, balancing weight and lightness, material presence and complete transparency.
Interiors: a sensory balance
Gabellini Sheppard Associates designed interiors that extend Ando’s architectural essence, translating the concept of harmony into the domestic realm. Wood, with its natural grain, brings warmth to the purity of concrete – and to the stone surfaces in the Minimal kitchen. Water and air flow through the space via reflective surfaces and carefully positioned openings. Light, a defining element, shapes the rooms and enhances a neutral palette that balances cool and warm tones.
The kitchen originates from the M2 monolith, then sculpted with meticulous precision. Here, Minimal applies its signature 30 and 45-degree angles, a hallmark of its design philosophy. Wooden columns are arranged symmetrically around the central island, framing the functional workspace for food preparation. The meeting of wood and natural stone creates a measured contrast, where every element is calibrated to harmonize with the space. The result is an essential kitchen seamlessly integrated into the architectural vision.

The surfaces reflect deep material research that elevates the project and enriches its tactile experience. Natural Bronze Amani stone, with its rich veining and intensity, is paired with the warmth of eucalyptus wood, producing a harmonious contrast. Each finish is carefully selected to ensure visual balance and lasting quality.
The M2 monolith adapts to its architectural context, creating a unique configuration in each apartment. In this version, asymmetry plays a central role: the kitchen opens on one side toward a concrete column and expansive windows, connecting material and light, interior and exterior. The result is a distinct spatial experience in every residence, where the kitchen reflects the relationship between architecture and everyday life.

The Slide system reimagines kitchen functionality with a fluid, invisible mechanism. The sliding top moves with millimetric precision, revealing or concealing the work surfaces with a single gesture. Cabinet fronts are defined by sharp 45-degree cuts, and a system of custom accessories allows every compartment to be fully personalized. This architectural discipline, expressed through the sculpted monolith, responds to the needs of contemporary living, striking a balance between innovation and the bespoke craftsmanship of Italian design.
